The Jewish Barry Levinson
Barry Levinson has had quite a career, garnering many accolades, including an Academy Award for best director in 1988 for Rain Man. Beginning his career as a writer, Levinson went on to write, direct and produce a number of notable films, including some personal films that touched on his youth and family growing up in Baltimore. We will look at four of Levinson’s films, focusing on how his Jewish background may have influenced his work. Movies to be studied include Diner (1983), Avalon (1990), and Liberty Heights (1999).

An adjunct professor of cinema at Yeshiva University, he is currently completing a book on Israeli film and cohosts Jewish Cinematheque on JBSTV.
