After The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center moved our programs online in March 2020 to help break what we thought would be a few months’ isolation, something extraordinary — and entirely unexpected — happened: Floridians and Texans suddenly joined our New York community to listen to Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Jane Fonda. Californians, soon followed by Australians and Israelis, tuned in to hear from the women of Shtisel, laugh with Harvey Fierstein, sing with David Broza, explore biblical archaeology with some of the world’s top archaeologists and stopped by for more of what grew to 200+ virtual events. The numbers have been astounding … at this point, over 450,000 registrations!
Tradition teaches that Jews should live in towns or neighborhoods that have synagogues, teachers and charity funds. After all, gathering together forges and strengthens the bonds that unite us and prepares the next generation to understand what it means to be Jewish. Temple Emanu-El has always cherished that commitment to community.
But as we’ve now discovered, community transcends physical boundaries. We hope you’ll be part of ours during a summer of eclectic virtual programming with President Bill Clinton and James Patterson chatting about the latest adventures of their fictional president, and former Police Commissioner Bill Bratton talking policing and police reform with former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara. Cookbook author extraordinaire Adeena Sussman and Benny Briga will ignite an unexpected interest in seltzer and New York will defend its hometown pride in its bagels against the newcomers from Los Angeles. David Grossman will discuss his latest book and a team of experts will help you cope with your fear, anxieties and mixed feelings about Israel.
I hope you’ll join us often — and that we’ll see you again in person this Fall.
