The Dark Side of Roald Dahl

A conversation with Giant ’s John Lithgow and Mark Rosenblatt

For decades, Roald Dahl was celebrated as one of the most beloved children’s authors of all time, creating classics like Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach.

Opening on Broadway after a sold-out, award-winning run in London’s West End, Giant examines the real-life antisemitic scandal that forced a public reckoning with Dahl’s legacy.

Ahead of the show’s 16-week limited run, Giant star John Lithgow (Conclave, The Crown) and playwright Mark Rosenblatt join us to confront a difficult question: Can celebrated work be separated from the harm caused by its creator? They also examine what compelled Rosenblatt to write the play in the first place – an urgent response to seeing these debates resurface repeatedly, unresolved and increasingly normalized. The conversation lands with particular force right now, as culture continues to debate whom we elevate and at what cost.
