Judaism in the Second Century

In this course, we will explore the transformation of Jewish life and thought in the aftermath of the late Second Temple era and during the consolidation of Roman rule. Using sources such as the Babatha Archive and evidence surrounding the Bar Kokhba Revolt, students will explore the political, social, and intellectual worlds of Jews across the Roman Empire, with particular attention to relations and debates among Jews, Christians, and pagans. We will also consider the early formation of the rabbinic movement within this broader historical landscape.

Dr. Alyssa M. Cady is a scholar of religions of Mediterranean Antiquity, focusing on material culture, literature and intellectual history. After teaching in the Religious Studies department at New York University, she became director of the newly created Temple Emanu-El Center for Interfaith Dialogue.
