The Ghetto Girls

Scores of Polish Jewish “ghetto girls” took the fight to the Nazis — and only the lucky few survived. Young women, many in their teens, hid revolvers in loaves of bread and built underground bunkers. They blew up water towers, firebombed trains, flirted with soldiers and bribed them with whiskey
. . . before killing them.

Judy Batalion, the granddaughter of Polish Holocaust survivors, discovered the largely unknown story of these brave commandos and revealed it in The Light of Days: The Untold Story of Women Resistance Fighters in Hitler’s Ghettos, now optioned for a major motion picture by Steven Spielberg.

For this special program, she’ll take us back to 1939 and introduce us to the women who put their lives on the line and formed a sisterhood of resistance in the face of staggering odds.

The author of White Walls: A Memoir about Motherhood, Daughterhood, and the Mess in Between, Judy Batalion has written essays and articles for a wide array of publications.

In conversation with award-winning journalist and author Sandee Brawarsky.
