An A+ in Humanity

Ron Wolfson and Bruce Powell Reimagine Education

A lot of English and Math, Science and History. A little Art. Perhaps a smattering of Music.

Those are the subjects that guide almost every school — and tell young people what is important for their futures.

But shouldn’t schools also teach students the joy of being mensches and help them understand that respecting others is inextricably linked to respecting yourself? Why not offer AP courses in thoughtfulness and require mitzvah-making?

If there’s ever been a moment, after a year of isolation and fear, when young people needed to be armed with compassion, kindness and coping skills, this is it. And pioneering educators Dr. Bruce Powell and Dr. Ron Wolfson propose a new curriculum for doing just that.

They join us for a conversation with Dr. Wendy Mogel to discuss that radical proposal at the heart of their new book, Raising A+ Human Beings, and its potential for more confident children and a better world.

A renowned Jewish educator, Bruce Powell has helped create 26 schools, including Yeshiva University of Los Angeles High School and the de Toledo High School in Los Angeles. He runs Jewish School Management, an educational consulting and coaching business.

Fingerhut Professor of Education at the American Jewish University and president of the Kripke Institute, Ron Wolfson is a popular speaker and author of books about individual and communal spiritual renewal, including The Art of Jewish Living series of family guides to spiritual celebration and his groundbreaking book, Relational Judaism.

A practicing clinical psychologist, Dr. Wendy Mogel, is a popular public speaker and a New York Times bestselling author, including of The Blessing of a Skinned Knee.
