All About Herzl:

Collecting a Man’s Life

For Suzanne Berns, educating the world about Herzl’s story is a full-time job. As curator of the Theodor Herzl Archive at the Central Zionist Archives (CZA) in Israel, which is part of the World Zionist Organization (WZO), she oversees the repository of diaries, letters and other memorabilia.

When he was in seventh grade and other Canadian boys were collecting stamps and model cars, David Matlow began gathering Herzl memorabilia, inspired by the Herzl portrait he inherited from his Belorussian grandparents. Decades later, he still hasn’t abandoned his dream of keeping Herzl’s memory alive and today holds the world’s largest private collection of Herzl memorabilia.

Matlow and Berns join us to chat about the mysteries and thrills of their discoveries, the items that have eluded them, the importance of collecting Herzl memorabilia and what we’ve learned by doing so; in conversation with Warren Klein, Curator, The Herbert & Eileen Bernard Museum.
