Unpacking the
Israeli Election
with Ambassador Ido Aharoni
For the fifth time in four years, Israelis streamed to the polls on November 1, and returned a coalition led by Benjamin Netanyahu to power yet again.
The new coalition is widely seen as a dramatic shift to the right. The left-leaning Meretz Party did not receive enough votes to be represented in parliament. And two religious ultranationalist parties are poised to form the third-largest bloc in the next Knesset.
What does this mean for Israel’s future? For peace? For the shape of Israeli democracy? For US/Israel relations?
Ambassador Ido Aharoni is ideally suited to provide an overview of the election and to answer your questions. A 25-year veteran of Israel’s Foreign service who served as Consul-General in New York and on the negotiating team behind the Oslo Accords, he is now Global Distinguished Professor for International relations at New York University’s Graduate School of Arts and Science.
