Temple Emanu-El Celebrates

Its 180th Anniversary

Friday Night Worship Services

180 Years. 9,360 Shabbat Evening Services.

In April 1845, the 37 men who had just formed Congregation Emanu-El held their first Shabbat services in a barren second-floor loft amid the tenements at Clinton and Grand Streets on the Lower East Side. In accordance with rabbinic law, they could not sit with their wives. No cantor filled their hearts with soaring music. And most of their service was conducted in their native German.

To celebrate how far Congregation Emanu-El has come over the past 180 years, we invite you to join us for an anniversary Shabbat evening service (our 9, 361st!) in our magnificent, soaring sanctuary, where we can sit beside anyone we choose and sing along with our Cantor and choir, in both English and Hebrew.

The service will feature dignitaries, taped remarks from the President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, and a special performance by world-renowned violinist Pinchas Zuckerman.

A celebratory Oneg will follow.
