As we celebrate Pride Shabbat, Temple Emanu-El is honored to be joined by Ofer Erez, the first openly trans officer in the Israel Defense Forces.
Born and raised on kibbutz Kfar Menahem in southern Israel, Erez began training with the IDF identifying as a woman and went on to graduate from officer training as a trans male. After being promoted to the rank of captain, he served as an advisor to the IDF on LGBTQ-related issues, helping to change perceptions toward the transgendered and policies toward their enlistment.
After leaving the military, Erez worked as director of Jerusalem Open House, a community center and advocacy group dedicated to making Jerusalem a truly inclusive city and, for two years, led Jerusalem’s March for Pride and Tolerance. In 2020, he joined the Israel Religious Action Center to found its Department of Public Affairs.
Please join us in welcoming Ofer Erez and reinforcing our commitment to a fully inclusive society.
