Dr. Eric Goldman:
Hollywood Zion: The Sixties
How American Moviemakers Presented Israel
Israel’s creation in 1948 was virtually made for the movies. In the mid-1960s, just before the 1967 Six Day War, Hollywood stars lined up to present powerful portraits of Israelis fighting to defend their young state: Sophia Loren and Peter Finch in Judith, Kirk Douglas and John Wayne in Cast a Giant Shadow and Rock Hudson and George Peppard in Tobruk. This mini-course will examine how American moviemakers of that time perceived and presented the fledgling country.
