Judaism in The First Century
This exploration of Jewish thought, practice and daily life will take students from the Pharisees, Sadducees and other sects in Judea, through the historical and philosophical writings of the golden age of Hellenistic Judaism in Egypt, to the deteriorating relationship between Jews and the Roman Empire that led to open rebellion and Great Jewish Revolt. In this overview of a critical period in Jewish history, you’ll meet sectarians and scholars, early mystics and revolutionaries. Optional readings and other resources will be provided.

Dr. Alyssa M. Cady is a scholar of religions of Mediterranean Antiquity, focusing on material culture, literature and intellectual history. After teaching in the Religious Studies department at New York University, she became director of the newly created Temple Emanu-El Center for Interfaith Dialogue.
