Musical Revolutionaries

Dawn of a New Day, by Matthew Evan Taylor, represents the composer’s remarkable ability to evoke atmosphere through sound. A Middlebury College professor, he increasingly composes music that reflects the turbulence of American life.

Duplicity, a string quartet by Anjna Swaminathan, weaves aspects of South Indian classical melodic and rhythmic vocabulary into the string quartet form. She was inspired by her mother, who engaged, she says, in “cultural duplicity” by shapeshifting between cultural, linguistic and traditional spaces.

String Quintet, Op 29, by Ludwig van Beethoven, the master composer’s only work written for the unusual combination of a string quintet.
