A Skirball Academy Class
Dr. Daniel Rynhold
Nietzsche and Modern Jewish Philosophy
Friedrich Nietzsche, the fascinating and controversial 19th-century German philosopher, has little complimentary to say about religion in general and Judaism in particular . . . to put it mildly. Since he was Hitler’s favorite philosopher, championed by the Nazis, one would imagine that he is not really a fit subject for study in the context of Jewish thought. In this course, however, we will discover how the Nazis misappropriated Nietzsche’s philosophy and how Nietzsche’s potent critique of religion can and has been put to positive use in the formation of a modernist interpretation of Judaism that one could almost call Nietzschean.
