A Skirball Academy Class

Dr. Daniel Rynhold

Faith and Loneliness:

The Philosophy of Joseph B. Soloveitchik

Is a life of faith still relevant in the modern world? Can different faith communities enter into genuine dialogue? Is it even possible to do Jewish philosophy? These and other questions will be discussed and debated as we examine the legacy of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, a major figure still much fought over in Modern Orthodox circles for his controversial stances at the intersection of traditionalism and modernity. In this class, we will explore Soloveitchik’s Halakhic Mind, Halakhic Man, Confrontation and Lonely Man of Faith, and discover why these works merit serious philosophical attention.
