Holiday Heroines
The Jewish calendar shapes our lives, our culture and our religion. But the stories of the holidays we celebrate usually center on male biblical characters. Think Moses as the hero of the Passover story, Mordechai as the driving force behind Purim and the Maccabees as the whole reason we spin dreidels at Chanukah. What about the incredible cadre of women historically celebrated throughout the Jewish year? How have they disappeared? In this course, you will meet holiday heroines like Judith and discover lesser-known traditions like the Festival of the Daughters. Isn’t it time to rethink who the heroes of our sacred stories really are?
October 11, 18, 25, November 1, 8, 15
$180, $120 for Temple Emanu-El members
Free for Friends of Streicker

Passionate about centering Torah around the stories and experiences of women, Sivan Rotholz has taught biblical literature and creative writing at numerous universities and is currently pursuing rabbinic ordination from HUC-JIR.
