How Meaning Renews: Sermons and Poems that Animate Each Other
The medium isn’t always the message, despite what Marshall McCluhan suggested. Indeed, a single message can be transmitted across media, the one reinforcing the other. This course will investigate that intriguing loop by pairing provocative sermons with accessible and engaging poems, illuminating an intimate relationship that brings deeper understanding to both. Each class will involve a close reading of select sermon passages alongside a few poems from diverse authors that reflect, or refract, its messages. Remember: Both Torah and poetry are for everyone!
Tuesdays, 10:00 – 11:30 AM
October 17, 24, 31, November 7, 14, 21
$180, $120 Temple Emanu-El members
Free for Friends of Streicker

Jessica Greenbaum is an award-winning and widely published poet, teacher of poetry, author of three books and coauthor of the first-ever poetry Haggadah. She has been teaching the pairing of Jewish text and contemporary poems for a decade.
