A Skirball Academy Class

Dr. Eric Goldman:

The Canadian Jewish Experience on the Silver Screen

Members of the fourth largest Jewish community in the world, Canadian Jews have long seen themselves reflected in the work of writers like Mordecai Richler and Ted Allan and filmmakers such as Ted Kotcheff and Ján Kádar. Training their eyes on a community with complex and rich Anglo-French connections, these artists provide us with insights into a history of hardship and anti-Semitism that helped forge a rich Jewish life.

The course will focus on how artists have portrayed the realities of Canadian Jewry through the screening of such films as The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1974), Lies My Father Told Me (1975), Je me souviens (2009), Félix et Meira (2014) and Barney’s Version (2010).

*Movies will be screened in segments with breaks, but we suggest that students watch the full films on their own.
