An entertainment historian, John Kenrick has worked in the theatre at every level, eventually serving as personal assistant to six Tony Award–winning producers, including the team behind the original production of Rent. He has taught at NYU, The New School and the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, is creator of the website Musicals101.com and founding curator for the new Museum of Broadway.
During his seven-decade career, Stephen Sondheim wrote for Ethel Merman and Zero Mostel, Angela Lansbury, Elaine Stritch, Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters. Along the way, he took the Broadway musical to places and themes it had never before explored.
In this class, we will journey from Gypsy and Company through Follies and A Little Night Music to Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods, diving deep into his most celebrated hits as well as his lesser-known scores.
