Lee Rubinstein has worked in the museum community for over fifteen years, her programs geared toward the Jewish community and history, including the “rag trade,” Jewish artists and how the women of the Tanach are featured in great art. She has given virtual tours of museums across the country and offered presentations at museums in Australia, England, New Zealand and Israel.
French, German and British designers, many of them Jewish, paved the way for the evolution of fashion in the United States. In this class, we will begin by examining their influence before honing in on designers who sprang from the wave of Jewish immigrants fleeing pogroms in Russia and Eastern Europe. Then we’ll turn to the decades between the 1930s and today as we explore how Jewish designers—as well as photographers and store owners—left their mark on American fashion.
